Redding has progressively increased its recycling tonnage every year. Our current projected rate is averaging around 40% (the state’s goal).

Co-Mingled Recyclables (these can be dropped off free of charge un-separated)
  • Cans – food & beverage, aluminum and tin, aluminum foil-rinsed clean
  • Glass – food & beverages, brown, blue, clear, green- rinsed clean
  • Plastics-food & beverage #1 thru #7- rinsed clean, styrofoam peanuts in tied bags
No Styrofoam or Plastic Bags- may be disposed in bulk for a fee

The following are also no charge but must be separated
  • Antifreeze
  • Bulbs - Fluorescent, 8’- 4’ or smaller
  • Rechargeable Batteries- NiCad, Lithium, Nickel Metal Hydride
  • Cardboard - Flattened
  • Clothing – Goodwill box on premises
  • Brush/Branches – under 3”– hardwood over 3”cut to fireplace length
  • Eyeglasses- Lions Club box on premises
  • Magazines- including advertising received in the mail
  • Newspapers- cross tied bundles
  • Oil – drained waste oil and filters
  • Paper- office paper white and color
  • Telephone Books
  • Electronics including TV's and Monitors

Chargeable items include garbage, demolition materials, metal, bulky waste (sofa, mattress), large appliances and tires, car batteries.  A fee schedule is available at the Recycling Center or at Town Hall.

Leaves can be dropped at the center, free for residents, but commercial haulers are charged a fee. Unscreened compost is available at $15/yard. Wood chips are available at no charge.

Permits: Permits may be purchased at the Transfer Station/Recycling Center or at Town Hall during normal business hours. Residential permits are valid for one year, July 1 to June 30, and each vehicle must display a permit.

The cost per permit is $25; senior permit (age 60 and over) is $10. Additional vehicle permits are $10/each and $5/seniors.


A Household Hazardous Waste collection is held twice a year, usually in the fall at the Danbury Highway Garage and  in the spring at Newtown Public Works. This is available free to all Redding residents.

The Transfer Station/Recycling Center is located at 84 Hopewell Woods Road off Route 58 (intersection of Hopewell & Beck Rd.) The Center is open Monday,Wednesday,Friday & Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Center is closed on Tuesdays,Thursdays, Sundays and legal holidays. Any closings due to weather conditions, etc. will be announced over WLAD 800AM and WDAQ 98.3FM.
