Kerry Miserendino, Redding Asst. Town Clerk

REDDING ATHLETIC FIELDS COMMITTEE
JANUARY 5, 2010
MEETING

Present:  Don Takacs, Paul Degener, Liz Pelzer, Chris Hocker, Paul Winstanley

Mr. Takacs called the January 5, 2010 meeting to order at 8:10 pm in the Redding Town Office Building.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion:  move to approve the minutes of the December 1, 2009 meeting as submitted.  Degener, Winstanley.  Approved. Unanimous.

UPDATE ON BLADES & GOVEN WORK
Mr. Takacs reported the Board of Selectmen approved the recommendations of the Redding Athletic Fields Committee to proceed with Phase A and Phase B work on Redding Community Center Field 2.  Phase A is for the design development, $13,000 and Phase B is for construction documents, $8,000.  Consideration of Phase C, construction administration, is premature.  The work for Phase A and Phase B will be funded by a STEAP grant.  The work can move forward as soon as the agreement is signed by the First Selectman, Natalie Ketcham.

OTHER BUSINESS
Discussion of the developing of a brochure for distribution to potential contributors for development of athletic fields followed. The group discussed the need to get information regarding athletic fields out to the public.  The group also discussed the potential of establishment of a donation fund to consistently raise funds for the advancement of athletic fields in town.  Mr. Hocker will investigate this issue.

Field maintenance.  The Park and Recreation Department has been very successfully maintaining the town fields.  Mr. Blick is currently using “coring” as a means to aerate the fields.  This method involves using a cylinder, pulling the plugs out onto the field.  The plugs remain on the surface and become a top dressing, and this method is good for enhancing the root grown and promotes grass growth.  The alternate method of aeration, currently being used at the high school, is when the cylinder pushes the plug deeper into the soil.  This method tends to create a more compacted soil condition.

ADJOURNMENT
The meeting was adjourned at 8:55 pm

Respectfully submitted,
