Minutes
ATHLETIC FIELDS COMMITTEE
Regular Meeting, Tuesday, June 2, 2009
Town Hall Hearing Room
8:00 P.M.
Attendance: Don Takacs, Chris Hocker, Ted Auer, Liz Pelzar. No members of the public were present.
The meeting was called to order at 8:12 pm.
1. Approval of Minutes. Minutes of the previous meeting of March 3, 2009 meeting were reviewed and approved unanimously (Pelzar, Auer).
2. Status of Fields Effort. Mr. Takacs reported that the proposed sand trenching of Field No. 2 at the Redding Community Center, which had been considered previously as a way to improve drainage, had not been done. It had been determined that given the possibility of wider ranging improvements at this field, it would not be cost-effective to spend an estimated $35,000 for sand trenching.
Mr. Takacs reported that he had asked Barry Blades to look into two possibilities for fields improvements: To expand and place artificial turf on Field No. 2; and to design and expansion of the John Read Middle School field that would allow the creation of an artificial turf football field. The second alternative would not place turf on the entire field area, nor would it include lights. He reported that according to Mr. Blades, it might be possible to save money by using Town forces to perform some of the rough work needed for a turf field, and to use fill already owned by the Town. Reportedly, Newtown had achieved a $200,000 savings by doing this for one of its fields. Mr. Blades was expected to complete a conceptual design and cost estimates for these alternatives by the
July meeting, and would be invited to attend that m eeting.
There was general agreement on the committee that, in addition to the existing STEAP grant funds, it would be possible to raise $100-$200,000 in private donations in order to complete a fields project costing in the $600,000 range.
A May 29 report from the New York Department of Environmental Conservation, showing no hazards from crumb rubber on synthetic turf fields, was distributed and discussed.
3. Adjournment. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:12 pm. (Auer, Hocker)
