Redding Park and Recreation – Meeting Minutes

LOCATION: Redding Community – P&R Center Conference Room
PRESENT:  Chairman- Paul Degener; Todd Bennett; Paula Darlington; Jan Dorenbosch; Meredith McClung; Gary Miyashiro
STAFF:  Rob Blick, Director; Bobby Cieri, Topstone Beach Supervisor

The meeting was called to order at 7:45 p.m.  

APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The Commission voted unanimously to approve the minutes of June 28, 2010.

PUBLIC COMMENT: Topstone Park Director Bobby Cieri gave a brief update as to activities at Topstone Beach. Topics discussed included the updated manual, daily activities at the Beach, new innovations, improvements or ideas for the Park and lifeguard training.

DIRECTORS REPORT:  The Commission discussed Mr. Blick’s monthly report. Highlights included ongoing renovation work at the Community Center; advertising and sponsors for the Concert on the Green (“COG”) and Lyrics Coffeehouse series and the development of subcommittees within the Commission. The sale of Topstone passes is up by 15%.

Members of the Commission who accepted sub-committee assignments are as follows:
  • COG/Lyrics Music Series - Gary Miyashiro, Meredith McClung, Todd Bennett
  • Budget/Finance - Gary Miyashiro
  • Online Registration - Paula Darlington, Jan Dorenbosch
Previously agreed subcommittees are:
  • Topstone Preservation & Improvement – Todd Bennett, Lisa LeBlanc, Meredith McClung (Playscape,) Paul Degener
  • P&R Staff/Personnel – Paul Degener, Susan Goldman
ONLINE REGISTRATION: Mr. Blick gave a brief status update as to the online registration process and payment methods. Mr. Blick urged Commission members to visit the new online service provider - RecTrac website to see some examples of “splash” pages from other Town’s P&R departments.

RAFC/COMMUNITY GARDEN: Mr. Dorenbosch will join Mr. Degener on the Athletic Fields Committee. The Commission discussed methods of raising funds for field’s development. Discussion included methods of a cooperative relationship with the “Redding Community Garden” expansion fundraising group, specifically regarding the movement of the water well head currently adjacent to Field #2.

Because of some concerns received by the Commission, members from the Redding Garden Club have been invited to attend a future Park and Recreation Commission meeting to further discuss plans for the proposed expansion of the Community Garden, as well as the possible cooperative fundraising opportunity.


TOPSTONE PARK:  Mr. Degener plans an informational presentation to the Board of Selectman at their next meeting to outline the addition of sand to the western beach area and elimination of the grassy area and replacing with sand. A formal plan with timetable and details with regard to moving the locker area and soda machine and installation of a playscape will be addressed at a future meeting.


There being no further business, the Commission voted unanimously to adjourn at 9:27 p.m.
