Redding Park and Recreation –Meeting Minutes

PRESENT: Chairperson- Paul Degener; Paula Darlington; Jan Dorenbosch; Lisa LeBlanc; Gary Miyashiro;
The meeting was called to order at 7:44 p.m.
DIRECTORS REPORT: The Commission discussed Mr. Blick’s monthly report. Highlights included replacement of the canopy at RCC, which had been damaged by wind.
LETTERS/CORRESPONDENCE: Mr. Blick received a request for use of Topstone Park from Ridgefield R.O.A.R. (Ridgefield Animal Rescue) organization to use the Park September 12 for a fundraiser for their Puppy Mill Rescue Fund. Event would need to be attended by P&R staff person for the time of their event because of plans for music and alcohol to be served; fee of $2 per person for ‘after hours’ use would be charged. Commission approved event and agreed to address overall group usage policy at future meeting.
PUBLIC COMMENT: None.
TOPSTONE ENHANCEMENT: Commission members discussed upcoming events at Topstone Park. Part of the discussion was with regard to alcohol being served at certain events. This topic will be discussed in further detail at a future meeting. After the success of the Trail Run event, Commission members reported that they had received positive feedback from residents about the Park and future events. Mr. Degener will coordinate a Flag Retirement Ceremony, tentatively scheduled for Memorial Day. Other events include a Youth Fishing Derby on May 22nd,, Topstone Clean up Day on May 15th and Dog Olympics on September 19th. Topstone Beach officially opens on June 23rd, and the Commission discussed a list of enhancements that include moving the dumpster to the parking lot and
enclosing it in a fenced area; purchase of large green rolling trash containers; cleaning out the parking lot culverts and repairing the water well head (which had been done at the time of this meeting); patch window frame and paint the Electrical Hut; fill-in and landscape beach area; level and fill-in Tether Ball area; repaint the “Topstone Beach” sign at the check-in table. Items on the list such as cleaning and re-painting the Guard Shack and repair/painting of picnic tables are routinely done by Staff before the season begins.
Mr. Blick and Mr. Degener will send a list of future Scout “community service” projects at Topstone Park to the local Troops. These include a Trail Restoration, Trail Blazing and Grill Removal.
The Commission will discuss the installation of a Playscape at Topstone Park during a future Commission meeting. Mr. Blick expressed that he wanted the lifeguard’s input with regard to quality control at Topstone and other service improvements. The Commission also discussed the Edward Steichen Photography recognition project. All Topstone subjects and issues will need to be discussed during a future meeting.
At 9:18 p.m., the Commission went into Executive Session to discuss Personnel issues.
At 10:02 p.m. the Commission exited Executive Session and the meeting adjourned at 10:02 p.m.
The next scheduled meeting will be May 24, 2010 at 7:30 p.m.
