 Redding Park and Recreation –Meeting Minutes

PRESENT:  Chairperson- Paul Degener; Todd Bennett; Paula Darlington; Jan Dorenbosch; Susan Goldman; Lisa LeBlanc; Gary Miyashiro; Liz Sager
STAFF:  Rob Blick, Director

The meeting was called to order at 7:36 p.m.  

The Minutes from January 20, 2010 were reviewed and unanimously approved on motion of Ms. Goldman and second of Mr. Miyashiro.

DIRECTORS REPORT:  The Commission discussed Mr. Blick’s monthly report. Highlights included the raft building workshop at Topstone, canceled due to lack of funds from Danbury; scheduling of Topstone Directors.

LETTERS/CORRESPONDENCE:  None.

PUBLIC COMMENT: None.

BUDGET DISCUSSION: The Commission discussed the status of the budget process. Part-time staff (summer/camp) salaries were taken out of the requests, and online registration is still included in the budget. In an effort to conserve costs, there was discussion as to regional cost sharing of equipment, such as field maintenance items. Also discussed was sharing maintenance of fields with the BOE, but as this involves union conflict issues, it may not be possible.
The Commission discussed the “Grey Beards” fund raising event for the basketball hoops at RES. A 5K run was also suggested.

LONG RANGE PLANNING: No change. Next steps will be discussed at the next RAFC meeting.

TOPSTONE ENHANCEMENT:  Mr. Degener distributed documents with regard to the Topstone Preservation effort. The brief presentation focused on suggestions for the family and beach areas of the park. The Commission discussed Mr. Degener’s  preliminary outline which included meeting with contacts throughout town and town agencies and groups such as Neighbors and Newcomers.; a Topstone Questionnaire survey; a costs development study; the Shelter/Pavilion; involvement of the Redding Land Trust and/or former ROLI (Redding Open Lands, Inc.) members; community service projects for scout groups; contacting other interested parties, such as the Norwalk Watershed Association and the Nature Conservancy. All Commission members also received a diagram of Topstone Beach area for each to provide their own input on preservation or restoration efforts. After thorough discussion and research on these and other suggestions, the Commission will present preliminary ideas to the BOS and later to the Town.

At 9:10 p.m., the Commission went into Executive Session to discuss personnel issues.

At 9:36 p.m., the Commission exited executive session and the meeting adjourned at 9:37p.m.

The next scheduled meeting will be March 22, 2010 at 7:30 p.m.
