Park and Recreation Meeting Minutes 01/29/2007

PRESENT:  Chairperson-Susan Goldman, Shannon Craley, Paul Degener, Ed Miller, Lee Morgan, Tushar Shah
STAFF:  Rob Blick, Director; Val Zebrowski, Recording Secretary.
ALSO PRESENT: Joe Macchio, Jean Tompkins

The meeting was called to order at 7:40 p.m.  
The minutes from December 18, 2006 were unanimously approved.

PUBLIC COMMENT/LETTERS/CORRESPONDENCE:  Ms. Tompkins spoke in support of an outdoor basketball court ay JRMS. The project might cost approximately $20,000 to $30,000.plus about 20,000 for lights. She asked that the Commission endorse the proposal. Mr. Miller suggested that a letter be drafted strongly endorsing the idea, and Mr. Degener suggested that Ms. Goldman draft the letter. Mr. Macchio, as President of the Redding Boys and Girls Club also gave the proposal his support.
   
DIRECTORS REPORT:  There was discussion as to special duty police coverage for traffic control at the Concerts on the Green. Different options were discussed as to alternatives to paying off duty Redding police officers for traffic control at the weekly summer concerts. If the budget is not amended, the police expense will be moved from the concert trust and agency fund to the general Park and Recreation budget portion.

The Commission also discussed back up lifeguard coverage for the pool at Meadow Ridge and Topstone Park. A system where alternate lifeguards are available was suggested.

Ms. Morgan had a question as to draining Topstone pond. It has been done in the past, part of a cleaning process that is done periodically. Mr. Blick said there would be an analysis done in July, and that he would try to gather more information about what might have been done in the 1980’s before then.

FINANCE COMMITTEE:  No update.

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION COMMITTEE:  No updates.

TOPSTONE PARK ENHANCEMENT COMMITTEE:  No updates.

ORGANIZATION/PERSONNEL: No updates.

ATHLETIC FIELDS COMMITTEE: There was a Board of Finance meeting at the same time as this meeting, and one item being addressed was the new field at JRMS. More information will be available at the February meeting.

COMMUNITY CENTER/GROUNDS COMMITTEE: Drainage issues were discussed regarding RCC 1 South.

WEBSITE:  There was discussion as to the Park and Recreation Department having its own website, without being connected to the town website as it now is. This would include online registrations using an outside server.

NEW BUSINESS:  No new business.
