Redding Park and Recreation – Meeting Minutes
Date: July 26, 2004
Town of Redding, Connecticut

PRESENT:  Acting Chairperson-Paul Degener; Joe Ventricelli, Charlie Fields, Tushar Shah,
Joe Dolan, Steve di Costanzo.

STAFF:  Rob Blick, Director; Debbie Clark, Administrative Assistant.
The meeting was called to order at 7:40 p.m.
The minutes from June 28th were approved.

PUBLIC COMMENT/LETTERS/CORRESPONDENCE:
·       Mr. Blick reviewed with the Commission an incident that had occurred involving Soccer Camp.  A child was left behind at Topstone Park.  A mother brought him to the lifeguard shack and the bus went back to get him.
·       On Sunday, July 25th, Topstone Park was closed due to the Assistant Director losing her keys.  All the back-up phone numbers she had were locked in the lifeguard shack. She found her keys later in the day and it was suggested that she always have important numbers on her.
·       Mr. Blick has been working with Meadow Ridge.  They would like to make their indoor pool available to us and it was approved by their board.  It may be possible for Park and Rec to have use of the pool a couple of days a week as well as have swim lessons there.

DIRECTORS REPORT:  Drew Hall, the Topstone Park Director, quit suddenly.  He had received a mean-spirited letter from one of the guards complaining about him.  She said she was also writing a letter to Mr. Blick, which she never did.  Mr. Hall felt it would be better to quit rather than deal with a few guards personal issues.  A new schedule was made for the rest of the summer.  Keith Morey will cover some of the shifts and Beth Garufi, our swim instructor, can do an occasional weekend.  Mr. Blick will also share in the supervision.

COMMUNITY CENTER BUILDING COMMITTEE:  Larry Hutvagner is taking care of getting quotes and ordering the maintenance building for the RCC.  The Commission agreed that discussions regarding the sharing of the building will be worked out when it is built.

There appears to be two missing quick connects for irrigation on the RCC fields.  A letter was sent to the irrigation sub-contractor asking that they either show us where they are or install them if they are missing.

Due to the proposals for the RES field coming in high, there is a possibility that we will have to wait until next
Spring or Fall to have it done.  If the final bids come in over budget then we will need to either find the additional money or wait.

JBHS BUILDING COMMITTEE LIAISON/ATHLETIC FIELDS COMMITTEE:  The Falcon Pride Group got financing from the bank and went before zoning.  There were zoning issues that need to be resolved under the umbrella of the JBHS Building Committee.  They will also have to go before the Region 9 Board of Ed to get their approval. (including approval of usage of the topsoil)

COMMUNITY CENTER STEERING COMMITTEE:  There was nothing new to share.

FINANCE COMMITTEE/BUDGET:  There was no discussion.

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION COMMITTEE:  There was nothing new to share.

TOPSTONE PARK ENHANCEMENT COMMITTEE:  The stencil kit will be put down as soon as possible.  Next year both basketball rims will be replaced.

ORGANIZATION/PERSONNEL COMMITTEE:  There was nothing new to share.

ATHLETIC FIELDS COMMITTEE:  Mr. Degener passed out an updated summary proposal of the athletic field usage.  He asked the Commission to review it and e-mail any changes they feel are necessary.  There has been no diminishing of field needs.  There is still a severe shortage of available fields, especially on week days.  The Commission would like the Board of Selectmen to continue looking into additional playing field space within the Town of Redding.  There will be a Fields Committee Meeting on Tuesday, August 3rd at 8:00 pm at the Town Hall.

GYM FLOOR COVERING COMMITTEE:  There will be a ribbon cutting.  The tentative date is August 30th.  There will also be photos taken.

COMMUNITY CENTER GROUNDS COMMITTEE:   This was covered under Community Center Building Committee.

WEBSITE COMMITTEE:  The new computers are in.  RecTrac upgrades are to be installed in a few weeks.

Meeting adjourned at 8:43 p.m.
Recording Secretary:  Debbie Clark
