The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m.
The minutes from April 26th were approved.
PUBLIC COMMENT/LETTERS/CORRESPONDENCE:
· On behalf of the Redding Boys and Girls Club (RBGC), a group as named above attended the Commission meeting. Their goal is to enhance the participation of Redding youth in basketball as well as increasing their skills in a supervised program through the summer. There are a group of parents that are willing to volunteer their time to make this happen at an indoor facility. The Commission was very supportive of the idea. Mr. Blick offered some time in the RCC gym for them. It will start July 14th on Wednesday evenings from
7:00-9:30 pm for middle schoolers. After looking at the success of the program, perhaps in the Fall 3rd and 4th
graders could be included. There could be more time available if the RBGC is willing to pay the custodial
. fees.
· The Highway Department did a lot of trimming at Topstone Park. Mr. Blick received a complaint about all the brush and the Cub Scouts went in and did a great job of cleaning up.
DIRECTORS REPORT: The high school coffee house on May 7th was very successful. The consensus of the Commission is that we need to do more of them. This led to discussion about having an open-field evening for high schoolers to play softball on the RCC fields. More information will be in the summer brochure. Mr. Shah is willing to donate equipment.
COMMUNITY CENTER BUILDING COMMITTEE: Mr. Shah again asked Mike Cardillo for the actual vs. budget numbers and still has not been able to get them. Natalie Ketcham and Larry Hutvagner met briefly with Charlie Fields, Rob Blick and Siobhan Streams before our Commission meeting. The retainage kept from Mercedes was not sufficient to pay for some drainage work. Money will have to be taken from the Park and Rec. expenses due to not having as many weeks of camp as expected. This is what the Commission was hoping would not have to happen – the Park and Recreation budget being charged to fix the fields rather than maintain them. While they are not happy with the solution, it was agreed that it is what it is, and it’s time to move forward.
JBHS BUILDING COMMITTEE LIAISON: Ms. Streams did not attend the last meeting. The latest minutes that she received had no information about the fields. Mr. Degener will ask Jay Contessa to come to the next Commission meeting to discuss ideas for the fields at JBHS.
COMMUNITY CENTER STEERING COMMITTEE: Mr. Roman has now taken over all the mowing for the town and is very busy. There are shelves that still need to be put up.
FINANCE COMMITTEE/BUDGET: The numbers were not available to be reviewed. The Comptroller cut $100.00 per mow of the fields out of next years budget.
PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION COMMITTEE: There was nothing to report.
TOPSTONE PARK ENHANCEMENT COMMITTEE: Topstone has been enhanced over the last two weekends and is looking good. Mr. di Costanzo received a comment about perhaps enhancing the basketball court at Topstone. Maybe more middle and high schoolers would use it then.
ORGANIZATION/PERSONNEL COMMITTEE: There was nothing to report.
ATHLETIC FIELDS COMMITTEE: Mr. Degener needs someone else to be on this committee with him. There will be a meeting June 1st at 8:00 p.m.
GYM FLOOR COVERING COMMITTEE/MARK TWAIN BOOK FAIR: There will be a ribbon cutting for the gym floor covering on June 23rd at the JRMS graduation. An invitation will go out to Jane Hickok and Marshall Metzger.
COMMUNITY CENTER GROUNDS COMMITTEE: It was suggested that when the softball fields open perhaps we could have an open-field grand opening. Possibly it could be held before a Concert On The Green.
WEBSITE COMMITTEE: They will meet after the new computers and Rec Trac are installed.
Meeting adjourned at 9:16 p.m.
Recording Secretary: Debbie Clark
