The position of Director of Human Services incorporates a variety of services to residents within the community. The department offers services to all ages who qualify.
The following is a list of services offered to residents: Medicare, Medicaid, ConnPace, tax relief, food stamps, Meals on Wheels, town and state social services, legal services, housing assistance, long term care insurance, supplement insurance health care, transportation, outreach, local senior and community groups, food pantry, fuel assistance, holiday programs, referrals for substance abuse, domestic violence, child abuse, sexual abuse and its prevention.
The department started a free cell phone program this fall. Residents who no longer needed their donated cell phones. The phones were then tested with the cooperation of the Redding Police Department and the Connecticut State Police. The phone is programmed for 911 emergency use only. When a senior receives their phone, they are asked to read and sign a statement that they are aware of the areas where there is no service and the town is not responsible for a resident not able to place a call.
The town of Redding offers an emergency fuel bank to residents who meet specific guidelines. The Operation Fuel Program and donations from local churches and residents fund this program.
The town offers a food pantry to residents who need to avail themselves of food when they are not working or just not able to afford basic food items.
Transportation remains a major challenge since the Sweetheart Bus hours have been cut back. It is difficult for seniors to schedule doctor appointments with the bus operating on the new limited schedule. If anyone is interested in becoming a volunteer driver to help residents who do not drive and need to get to medical appointments in the area, please contact the office.
