II.  Reports

Ms. Schiron was not present. However, the Municipal Agent’s Report was submitted and reviewed. Ms. Kopfstein reported that she had gone over a few issues and concerns with Gail Schiron, and will keep in contact with her and keep the Commission informed. The Commission discussed increasing contributions for the Food Pantry. Ms. Sibilio reported that Sam Crocker serves on the advisory board for Community Health Charities of New England (CHCNE), which is a federation of over 50 national health charities. CHCNE sponsors workplace giving programs whereby company employees can donate to different disease charities (heart, cancer, Parkinson’s, Alzheimers, etc.) through payroll deductions. They also sponsor a discount drug program entitled “NeedyMeds”, to make prescription drugs available (at a discounted price) to those without health insurance. The program is open to everyone regardless of income or insurance coverage. The program is free, and local businesses such as CVS and Costco accept the cards. Average savings are 50%.  Commission members discussed the current heat wave and a current list of seniors to check on. The Community Center will be open and available for those without air conditioning.

Ms. Sibilio presented the Heritage Center Report to the Commission. There were 192 van trips in June for a total of 1,134 miles. The Commission discussed distribution of the newsletter and the luncheon program.

First Selectman Natalie Ketcham read a press release into the record with regard to Georgetown Land Development Company, announcing that they were no longer in contract to sell the development site to Georgetown green, LLC. Manager of GLDC Rocco Trotta will continue to oversee operations and is committed to the project and the community. Plans for roadway improvements will continue, and alternate buyers and/or investors will be sought in accordance with the master plan. Improvement plans will commence as soon as the market conditions allow. There may be consideration for other short term senior housing. The Town has received a $20,000 grant to study the housing overlay zones for denser housing. The West Redding Center area is a focus, as well as other areas of Georgetown.

Ms. Metzger reported that the Quality Living at Home Senior Directory for Services in Redding would not be available as soon as was planned. There was additional discussion and adjustments with regard to content.

Commission members discussed nominations for Chair and Vice-Chair of the COA.
Upon motion of Mr. Morris to nominate Rosalind Kopfstein as Chair and Janet Metzger as Vice-Chair, Mrs. Hayes seconded. There were no further nominations. The motion carried unanimously.

III.  Adjournment
The next COA meeting is scheduled for September 1, 2010 at 9:00 a.m., to be held at Town Hall.
There being no further business before the Commission, the meeting was adjourned at 10:06 a.m.
